ASTM D4318 Temporarily Withdrawn

Jun 17, 2026

ASTM D4318 (Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, and Plasticity Index of Soils) has been temporarily withdrawn as part of ASTM’s standard review cycle. Reinstatement is expected once reapproval through Committee D18 is complete.

What This Means for Your Laboratory

  • No impact to services
  • Assessments will continue
  • Proficiency samples remain available
  • Accreditation services will be maintained

Why the Standard Was Withdrawn

In accordance with Regulations Governing ASTM Technical Committees, ASTM standards are periodically reviewed and must be reapproved within a set timeframe. Withdrawal can occur during this process if reapproval is not completed on schedule.

“If the standard has not received a new approval date by December 31 of the eighth year since the last approval date, the standard will be withdrawn, unless there are unresolved main committee negative votes (see Section 10.6.3.1).”
