The AASHTO Accreditation Program has released a new policy and guidance document. The "AASHTO T152 and ASTM C231: Aggregate Correction Factors for Concrete Air Content Determinations Using Pressure Meters" clarifies how laboratories should determine and apply the aggregate correction factor required by AASHTO T 152 and ASTM C231. It outlines AASHTO Accreditation Program expectations for compliant practice and resolving related nonconformities. Until updates are made within ASTM C231, this document serves as the essential reference for accredited laboratories.

The newly redesigned AAP Procedures Manual presents the requirements of the AASHTO Accreditation Program in a new format that is easier to read and understand. This new version integrates the old procedures manual with the newer policy and guidance documents that AASHTO re:source had been issuing on its website. It also includes helpful links that can take the reader to other documents or websites to learn more.

The AASHTO Accreditation Program has clarified its suspension policy regarding consecutive low ratings when current round ratings are suppressed. For example, since ratings for the 2025 Hot Mix Gyratory Proficiency Samples were suppressed, the 2024 and 2026 results will be used to determine any potential suspensions.

We are currently preparing the 2026 Proficiency Sample billing cycle. To streamline the invoicing process and ensure customers receive an accurate invoice, we are asking customers to review their laboratory’s proficiency sample subscription and make any necessary changes by August 15, 2025.

The AASHTOresource.org website will be taken offline Friday, April 11 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. We will be migrating our systems to a new data center over the weekend. We expect to restore service on Monday, April 14 at around 10:00 a.m. EDT. If this timeframe is extended, updated information will be provided on a temporary page at AASHTOresource.org.

We have discovered that some testing laboratories have sought laboratory accreditation for facilities that primarily serve as sample transfer depots rather than fully-operational testing laboratories. AASHTO Accreditation is strictly reserved for testing laboratories and does not extend to sample transfer depots. The AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) has been actively identifying and removing such facilities from the program as they are discovered.

The AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) has released the following policy document: AASHTO Accreditation Policy and Guidance on Masonry Unit and Prism Testing. This policy is based on the requirements of ASTM C1716/C1716M-24, ASTM C140/C140M-24, and ASTM C1314-23b.

Starting October 2, 2024, customers will no longer be able to request AASHTO re:source on-site assessments for E329 (Steel Inspection); however, the laboratories currently accredited for this standard will continue to maintain accreditation until their next AASHTO re:source on-site assessments have been fully processed.

Effective July 1st, 2024, as part of our commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring the program’s sustainability, we are implementing changes to the annual AASHTO Accreditation Program fees.

Registration and enrollment is now open for these new proficiency sample programs: Asphalt Mixture Hamburg Wheel Track (HWT) and Winter Maintenance Products (WMP)!

In collaboration with the California Division of the State Architect (DSA), we have developed an on-site evaluation program for laboratories providing special inspection and/or structural testing services to the DSA. The Special Inspection Program (SIP) is specifically for laboratories seeking to meet or maintain DSA’s Laboratory Evaluation and Acceptance (LEA) program requirements.

In 2023 the following changes were made to the AASHTO Accreditation Policy and Guidance on Prerequisites for Accreditation.

Starting January 2024, as part of the Annual Review process, the AASHTO Accreditation Program will carry out a review of every AASHTO Accredited laboratory’s website to verify that the language and logos used are in conformance with the AASHTO Accreditation Policy on Publicizing Accreditation.

Effective January 1, 2024, the AASHTO re:source Laboratory Assessment Program (LAP) will implement a new hourly-rate fee structure for on-site assessments. This replaces the current half-day fee structure and is a more accurate and fair representation of our staff's time spent at your laboratory. This change was made in part due to feedback received from customers on potential inaccuracies of the half-day fee structure.

Monday, July 31, 2023, AASHTO released the Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and AASHTO Provisional Standards, 43rd Edition—2023 (the “Materials Standards”).

Effective on July 1st, 2023, AASHTO re:source will suspend the Proficiency Sample Program Service to all participating CMT laboratories in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

The following will be added to our scopes of services: AASHTO T 111, Standard Method of Test for Mineral Matter or Ash in Asphalt Materials, and ASTM D5334, Standard Test Method for Determination of Thermal Conductivity of Soil and Rock by Thermal Needle Probe Procedure.

As of January 19, 2023, AASHTO Accredited laboratories are no longer required to submit quality manual policies and procedures prior to the on-site assessment.

Due to concerns with the accuracy of email alerts that are automatically generated through the Proficiency Sample Program for low ratings or failure to submit data, AASHTO re:source has suspended this notification service for AASHTO Accredited laboratories and registered specifiers.

The following was recently added to our scopes of services: ASTM D7012 Standard Test Methods for Compressive Strength and Elastic Moduli of Intact Rock Core Specimens under Varying States of Stress and Temperatures - Method D.

Participants that do not pay their annual PSP invoice within 30 days of receipt will have their enrollment cancelled. Because of the amount of time it takes our staff to reenroll participants, if your lab’s enrollment is cancelled and needs to be reenrolled, you will be charged a fee of $100.

The sample scheme known as the Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design Samples will be split into three distinct programs based on the method of compaction used to prepare the specimens.

After a preliminary review of the 42nd edition of the AASHTO Materials Standards, we anticipate many standards will require additional changes before we can begin complete enforcement of the new requirements throughout our programs. ​

The AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) is raising its annual administrative fees starting on July 1, 2022.

AASHTO re:source will resume on-site assessments (rather than remote assessments) in all parts of the United States starting July 25, 2022. We will continue to perform remote assessments for customers outside of the United States. We will continue to offer remote assessments for all laboratories that need a supplemental assessment in order to add standards to their current scope of accreditation.

As of April 13, 2022, the Duty of Care for On-Site Assessments has been updated. Please review it for the most current information.

ASTM D7263, Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Determination of Density and Unit Weight of Soil Specimens, has been added to our scopes of service for the assessment and accreditation programs.

ASTM D8225, Standard Test Method Determination of Cracking Tolerance Index of Asphalt Mixture Using the Indirect Tensile Cracking Test at Intermediate Temperature, has been added to our scopes of service for the assessment and accreditation programs.

After careful planning, AASHTO will begin conducting on-site assessments in states/territories where available information indicates that COVID-19 conditions are safe for travel. COVID-19 data will be monitored continually until all assessments in the state are complete.

At this time, we will continue to conduct remote assessments until further notice. When a new target date for return to on-site assessments has been determined, we will inform customers via email, our website, and social media. We will send another update to customers no later than October 3, 2021.

On Friday, July 30, 2021, AASHTO released the Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and AASHTO Provisional Standards, 41st Edition—2021 (the “Materials Standards”). Be advised that AASHTO currently released the PDF Download version of the standards; the five-volume paperback version is being printed and will be available to purchase in September 2021.

In June, we announced our plan to return to on-site assessments in September. After careful consideration, AASHTO re:source has made the difficult decision to postpone this return to on-site assessments.

We will be adding the following tests to our scope of accreditation starting June 30: ASTM A615, ASTM A706, and ASTM A1064.

We are pleased to announce that AASHTO re:source is tentatively planning to resume on-site laboratory assessments the week of September 6, 2021.

Calendar year 2022 will bring a significant change to the Proficiency Sample Program. The existing “Coarse” and “Fine” sample programs will be replaced with “Aggregate Gradation and Gravity” and “Aggregate Degradation” sample programs.

Effective this year, AASHTO will make two important changes to the 2021 Edition of the Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and AASHTO Provisional Standards (the "Materials Standards"), starting in July 2021.

The health and safety of our customers, staff, and communities are of utmost importance to AASHTO. After careful consideration, the following changes will be made to our programs effective Monday, March 16, 2020

Planning is underway for the fourth annual AASHTO re:source Technical Exchange. This unique event has proven to be a great opportunity for laboratory managers, quality managers, supervisors, and technicians to learn more about quality and testing in the construction materials testing (CMT) industry.

Effective July 1, 2019, fees associated with the AASHTO Accreditation Program (AAP) will be changing. Most customers will not experience this fee increase until the end of the current annual billing cycle (March 31, 2020).

In 2018, AASHTO re:source added 9 standards to the scopes of AASHTO Accreditation and laboratory assessment. Get the full list.

On January 1, 2019 AASHTO re:source will implement a new fee structure for Laboratory Assessment Program (LAP) services. The new fee structure will be time-based and will no longer include fees for individual tests or standards assessed.

The 2019 AASHTO re:source Technical Exchange will be March 11-14 in Savannah, GA​.

On August 6, 2018, the AASHTO Accreditation and Laboratory Assessment Programs will be adding a new Rock scope to their programs. We will be moving the some methods from the Soils scope to the Rock scope. This additional scope will not impact the cost of an on-site assessment or your laboratory’s AASHTO Accreditation status. It will only change how these tests are listed on your laboratory’s assessment reports, request forms, and accreditation listing/certificate of accreditation.

In the coming weeks we will release changes designed to make it quicker and easier for you to respond to nonconformities.

We are pleased to announce that we have added the Texas Methods, Tex-148-e and Tex-113-E, to our scope of assessments and accreditation.

Project owners can now use an interactive map to find AASHTO Accredited laboratories across city and state lines.

The deadline for submitting corrective actions and supporting documentation is now 60 days from the date the final report was issued. This change impacts both AASHTO re:source and CCRL on-site assessments.
