Changes to the Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design Samples

Aug 26, 2022

2023 will bring about important changes to the AASHTO re:source Proficiency Sample Program.

The Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design included all three methods of compaction categorized by the different mixture designs for the three different compactors. Throughout the duration of the current scheme, we have received feedback from participants indicating that there are challenges with the reporting criteria, instructions, and datasheets.

The sample scheme known as the Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design Samples will be split into three distinct programs based on the method of compaction used to prepare the specimens. The new sample schemes will be as follows:

  • Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design by California Kneading Compaction (HCA)
  • Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design by Gyratory Shear Compaction (HTX)
  • Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design by 4-in Gyratory Compaction (HCO)

Each sample scheme will require the testing and reporting of the data for the volumetric properties associated with each compaction effort as it did previously. We are hopeful that by splitting the current scheme in to three distinct schemes, we will alleviate the concerns of the participants leading to a more effective program.

The production and sample schedule will be like previous years with the samples being distributed in the second quarter of each year (April-June). Please ensure that your laboratory is appropriately enrolled.

Enrollment Changes
Changes to the enrollment for laboratories that were enrolled in the 2022 Asphalt Mixtures Hveem Design samples 77/87 will be made automatically by AASHTO re:source. Should you wish to change your enrollment status, please login to your account to make any changes. If you have any specific questions regarding the changes, please contact All changes to enrollment must be completed by March 1st, 2023.

The 2023 Fee Schedule has been posted since June 2022.

AASHTO Accredited Laboratories
The change in the programs will not affect your accreditation status unless your laboratory chooses not to participate in the program(s) applicable to its accreditation scope. The AASHTO Accreditation Program requirements for participation in proficiency sample programs remain unchanged. The process for evaluation of accreditation and methods of resolution of proficiency sample program-related issues will also remain unchanged.

Historical Data
There will be no loss of historical data from previous Asphalt Mixture Hveem Design sample rounds. The Sample Round Analysis and Compilation of Statistics will still be available for use by the industry and members.
